great wall revisited

for all the bad flak china has been receiving lately, e.g. poisoned century eggs and white rabbit sweets and the hotly debated wtf chopped cardboard meat, which i think is a strong contender for the 8th wonder of the world, i'd have to say that china remains as one of the most bizarre countries around, unless you like this sorta thing:

many cracked bowls later, my brother was able to do this too. proves that all you need is just a big tummy.

but fake food or not, i really did dig the great wall, clearly the highlight of my trip

the steps were massive in height and tiny in width, either the qin soldiers had bound feet so they could climb them more easily, or fell to their deaths trying to scale them in their clunky armor and boots. i'm leaning towards the latter.

the view from the top- you really don't want to fall down. chances are people would let you roll on past as they'd be too tired to help you themselves.

the great wall in all it's grandeur. truly awe-inspiring stuff, no?

here's what else is awe-inspiring, the only person to have ever scaled the entire wall spent a ballbreaking 8 months doing it and wore out 6 pairs of shoes. i'm getting angina just contemplating the sheerness of that remarkable feat.

this was pretty amazing too, that qin guy was a crazy bugger.

so i guess i actually do like china, quirky eccentricities and all. i loved sipping tea in a teahouse, riding the trishaw, having my feet massaged by chinese medical students (foot relexology is part of their curriculum) and eating candied strawberries from the roadside stalls. besides, anywhere which sells shoes for $4 a pop gets my vote. i'm a fan.

with as much nonchalance as i could possibly muster, i say, i love going for the NDP.
if everyone had an inner auntie, mine would probably be one of the biggest, loudest hokkien-speaking aunties around. from my list of favourite auntie things to do, i managed to fulfill at least 4 of them yesterday:
- hobnobbing with the other aunties at the zara sale
- using the meritus mandarin and oriental toilets. wah the oriental toilet damn nice ley, got free towel to wipe your hands one. plus branded soap!
- getting lor to hide my goodie bag so i could have one more
- and the ultimate auntie ritual: braving the long, snaking queues and human jams to get in and out of the stadium

seriously though, NDP 2007 made for one very pretty extravaganza

the waterfront location was perfect, we had splendid views of the oh-very-gorgeous skyline, the Fullerton, the Esplanade, the port, and the brand spanking new singapore flyer. many oohs and ahhs from auntie me ensued, i was mesmerised, completely and utterly swept away.

because it was the preview of the preview, they made RI boys simulate the entrance of the PAP, and during the nemo segment of the mass display, people holding "seaweed" placards swayed along in the background, surrounded by starfishes, anemone and squid. very effective.
much of the night's entertainment was supplied by a group of boisterous sec sch boys sitting behind us, who were the self-appointed critics of the entire show:
-on the taiji segment: "wah lau, this one every morning below my void deck also have!"
-on kit chan coming onstage to sing: "HELLO AUNTIE!" (just maybe, they were referring to me instead)
-and my personal favourite, on ivy singh lim featuring in one segment, holding a Wild S'pore sign:
random young punk: (reading aloud) wild spore
random young punk's friend: wild singapore lah!!!

happy birthday, singapore. live long, live strong.
