summer somnolence.

yes, school has started for me already. if i have to remind one more person that i'm not on holiday anymore i think i'll scream. and it's only been one week so far but i'm feeling increasingly worn out and it's not because i'm under a damn lot of stress and we're speed clerking patients. on the contrary, i reach AH at 10.30 earliest, take long leisurely lunches at ikea and AV, and hole up in the student's lounge watching russell peters and getting scolded by fats. so i can't think what could possibly be causing my lethargy except perhaps walking around aimlessly in the hospital in the blistering heat trapped in a white coat, and my still endless trips down to town and lugging home whatever frivolous spoils i reap from the GSS. which isn't very G anyways.

but AH is a lovely hospital with alot of trees and bushes and singing crickets. also many mozzies, which makes me think alot about DSS and DHS and contracting dengue for the 2nd time. the patients i've clerked at AH so far are really sweet, and best of all, many MANY speak english! oh heaven. no more having to fumble thru interviews with my lok kok cheena. but there really are too few of them for us to clerk, and far too many psych patients. i've yet to see the patient who recites the pledge and sings the national anthem.

and people tell me the med posting is alot more strenuous than surg. this means i really should get down and dirty with kumar and clark soon. rah.

finally tasted a piece of heaven that is marmalade pantry sticky date toffee pudding with seow today! oh oh so yummy. and the thai embassy is having some thai festival from now till monday so those who want your mango with glutinous rice and chatuchak kicks head on down. they even had thai massage stalls set up in the open, if i didn't have so much face to save i would actually try that out.

anyway was watching singapore idol a few hours ago and jay lim cried on national tv. oddly enough i found myself very attracted to that, cooing and aww-ing like an idiot. which confirms that i've a soft spot for men who cry, as i've long suspected. oh dear. currently i'm also feeling very paiseh because i've been busy professing my love for a certain atsushi yanagisawa, no.13 on the japan team from the last wc in 2002. all along i've always thought he looked mighty fine playing on the pitch, i don't know why really. so i'd wanted to stick a photo of him here as a tribute to my beloved japan which has been booted out of the competition (disclaimer, i don't actually think they play well. i just think they're hot.) so i googled his name into google images, happily preparing myself for a rightclick-save frenzy. but
to my horror of horrors, he didn't look very hot at all. not even close.
i found my heart plunging 100 storeys down, thinking ohmygod what have i done what have i done.

no photos of him because i am truly embarrassed.

now not only do i not have holidays, i am also cockeyed.

yesterday the brave among us decided to suss out mango sales and heartland malls. so today as recuperation i dated myself out. i sound like the perfect picture of nonchalance, but the only reason why that happened was because i wasn't allowed to go to JB with lor and his cronies, the sole reason that i know of being i wouldn't be able to fit in their cab. even after i offered to sit on biyong's lap. so fair thee well my dunkin donuts and a&w floats and baskin robbins and kenny rogers. but i'm not bitter. not really.

so today i spent one on one quality time with me doing the stuff i like; going to arab street and textile centre, looking at crafts and trimming and beads and such, eating takopachi and sipping orangina while i windowshop, suntec for my monthly pilgrimmage haha jayne, and walking by the esplanade installation art pieces and stopping to dissect and admire them for as long as i want.

when at the hairdresser's today i asked him could you please just trim a little bit i like my hair long, and halfway through he confidently tells me you know right i'm actually very scissor-happy, ignoring the aghast look plastered on my face. and i end up with a shorter do than i'd hoped. but i think it's growing on me.
and when i was waiting waiting waiting at the bus stop for 77 to go home, when hey i see mel! and how often do we bump into each other like that! so we promptly leave the bus stop for supper at glutton's bay after i waited for one bloody half hour for 77. i swear i hate sbs. and they hate me. but in return i got good food and good company and somehow when you're waiting for a bus with a friend, the 30min doesn't seem half as long as when you're alone.
so it's funny how life hands you sudden surprise curveballs and things don't exactly go according to plan. but sometimes, like today, life turns out even better than you'd expect.

but don't mind me. it's late, and i'm feeling mellow.

i have so much to give thanks for now, i don't know where to begin.

the party was held last wednesday at the charmingly named swan lake gazebo, amidst my fears of scorchingly hot weather or dampening rain, which all proved to be unfounded. the skies were painted the brightest shade of blue, embellished with fluffy clouds, and we even saw the tiniest streak of rainbow, but a rainbow nevertheless. and my horrid visions of nasty ants and mozzies harrassing me and my picnic food never manifested themselves either. probably the only mishap that occured was my burnt fondue chocolate and it's tragic demise into some random rubbish chute.

the other thing i was worried about was that i'd be the only kuku turning up in a dress right smack in the middle of the hot HOT botanic gardens, despite my appeal for all the girls to wear their prettiest sundresses. and even with my bribes of extra scones for those who acceded to my simple request, the number of precious girlfriends who came in dresses i could count on but one hand. pray tell, what's a birthday girl gotta do to fulfill her one little wish. now note in the photos below my striking resemblance to maria in the sound of music, surrounded by all her von trapp children, which honestly wasn't my intention. see lah you people.

but, i know i've the best friends on earth :) and even though it may not be obvious, i really love all of you very much.
didn't get to say a proper, grammatically sound speech because i was too busy crying and being emo. damn embarrassing lah but lor said something very wise: what's a party of mine without me crying? too true.
so i'll say what i'd meant to say here.
to the girls i've known forever, friends like us happen only once or twice in a lifetime. as far apart as we may be, i know our friendship is for keeps and i will never let go of us.
to my church friends, thank you for the much needed spiritual support you've given me so freely and indulgently. i think i see a bright future ahead of us.
to my medicine friends, i can't wish for nicer colleagues-to-be. i really appreciate how we support each other through our tiring schooldays and our neverending exams, for the warmth and selflessness that all of you portray. to my og especially, i can't believe we've stuck tog for so long! thank you for the loveliest birthday surprise (i still haven't gotten 1!) and for generously helping me out with my party and the blingbling 0.7 carat diamond that thrashes the one i wear on my hand. (i just know i have to slip this in somewhere or my head will roll) and you know what? despite all the bitchy jokes and my queen bee status hurr...i really love you guys.

to my boyfriend, whom i know loves getting mentioned on my blog.

you know you do so much that i don't even ask for; the most wonderful banner, the 100 balloons, the time and effort you put into making my birthday perfect, and you do it all without even complaining. well, not much anyway haha. i've always been amazed at the amount of tolerance you have, even when i'm irritable and irritating and high strung and anal, and i know i was all of those many times this week.
is it safe to say that i wanna spend the next 21 years and beyond with you? well, i'll say it anyhow :)

i am a very happy girl.

back from kl since thurs and i'm missing the company. i like going to camp with friends, it's like having an extended slumber party with lots of girl talk and junk food, late nights in a nice hotel room and playing taboo and guesstures until we concuss. and all the silly things we got about to.
mostly i'll remember:
-faithfully waking up late every single morning and being late for almost everything else,
-our flagrant disregard for the rules and wearing white so we wouldn't have to play horrid wet and dirty games,
-plotting to pon afternoon sessions to go shopping,
-taking neoprints in some dodgy shop and the hilarious outcomes,
-that lovely water taxi ride with the wind in our hair and the sun setting in the horizon and mat rock blasting in the background,
-climbing atop horses in the middle of the night to photowhore and distract sarah mostly, so the rest could get ready for her birthday surprise,
-A&W and dunkin donut lovin' at KLCC,
-dangerous cab drivers,
-playing true colours on the coach back where we promptly abandoned the entire game structure to involve just about everyone in church we knew.

it's been about a year and a half since i joined coos, but i've never really felt like i'm part of the church before this camp. now i see that changing somewhat, and i figure that can only be a good thing :)

people have been asking me what i'd like for my birthday so i've been trying to think of a wish list but somehow i can't really come up with one. i know i'd like alot of stuff but it's difficult not to be wishy washy about it. maybe i'm just shy. haha! it's just that when given permission to be shameless it's still bloody hard to tell people what i want, even though by nature i know and you know that i'm damn shameless one. but i'd like to think that i'm contented with what i have. i guess all i'm wishing for now is a gorgeous breezy sunny (but not too sunny) mid afternoon come wednesday, and hold the rain please. oh and for everyone to have a good time!
