Saturday, January 31, 2004 pensive Rolls and flows of angel hair, Ice cream castles in the air, Feather canyons everywhere, I've looked at clouds that way. But now they only block the sun. They rain, they snow on everyone. So many things I would've done But clouds got in my way. I've looked at clouds from both sides now, From up and down and still somehow It's clouds' illusions I recall. I really don't know clouds at all. Moons and Junes and ferris wheels, The dizzy, dancing way you feel As every fairy tale comes real. I've looked at love that way. But now it's just another show. Leave 'em laughin' when you go. But if you care, don't let 'em know Don't give yourself away. I've looked at love from both sides now From give and take and still somehow It's love's illusions I recall. I really don't know love at all. Tears and fears and feeling proud, Say "I love you" right out loud. Dreams and schemes and circus crowds I've looked at life that way. But now old friends are acting strange. They shake their heads and say I've changed. But something's lost when something's gained Living everyday. I've looked at life from both sides now From win and lose and still somehow It's life's illusions I recall. I really don't know life at all. char 1/31/2004 11:41:00 AM

i'll teach you to ride the wind's back, and away we go... been watching a string of wonderful movies lately. and i feel absolutely 100% confirmed with a C and a D that the last samurai and peter pan are 2 of the best movies of 2004. not that 04 has really begun but i'll take my chances. just watched samurai yesterday, all the dropdead gorgeous shots of mt fuji and there was no lack of mouthwateringly fresh jap guys, a stark contrast from reality. Shin Koyamada is the japanese counterpart of legolas. bimbo comments aside, tom cruise put up a really laudable performance. read about all the training he had to go through to morph into his samurai role, he had to add a whopping 25 pounds of muscle to his physique. serious shit. and he very nearly had his head sliced off too. what impressed me was the artistic and historical detail that went into the show, right down to the ancient samurai swords the actors wielded whilst on horseback, but most of all, the honour and integrity of the samurai, the cruel brutality of war and the serenity of romance juxtaposed with it. and did i mention the movie made me pine for japan again. it's sakura season soon. blah. and i think almost everyone's published their take on peter pan on their blogs, so i'll just say that the movie truly deserves all the good reviews its been getting. personally, i adored the lush victorian-esque landscapes and sets, and the romanticism of fairies and pirates and mermaids, and the daredevil of those who make believe. J.M. barrie once said peter pan was for children, and for those who were once children, and after the show, the notion of never growing up seemed all too appealing. but then again, never is an awfully long time... char 1/27/2004 07:57:00 PM
Once or twice, immersed in reveries of light and work and wood, he neared and glimpsed the large and inexplicable itself. To be alive amongst the sawdust and the stars was beyond understanding; to be this person, in this place, and now. Even to contemplate that puzzle was to stray too far from safer paths, to sweat and shiver in that hollow room which has no doors or walls, where Never End and Never Start hold their invisible debate. There'd be no echo there to comfort him, or anyone. No dark or light. Not even any time. And only god- if only god would show himself- to make much sense of it. Faith or dismay, that was the choice. Choose Never End or Never Start. Choose god or pandemonium. When Jesus chose and put his faith in god, he blinked away the hollow room. He brought the wood, the tools, the workshop into focus once more. His spirit softened and solidified again, as it had done when he was in his teens, except more bleakly. It formed a question to be put to god. A question taken from the hollow room. A question that a child would ask. This was his question for the wilderness. The question of a simple-hearted, fragile man- guileless in his love of god, spontaneous and vulnerable in his beliefs. You see these motes, this dust, this bread, these soundless corners hung with webs, these fingerprints, engraved with tiny lines? back from chinatown which is some crazy out of this world madhouse on cny eve. but what else did i expect. the whole place was really ren shan ren hai and at the end of it i didn't know if i was sweaty from my sweat or other people's sweat which is really such a disgusting thought i shall cease thinking about it. now. but i guess beyond all the squeezing and jostling and pushing the fireworks and firecrackers made it worthwhile. there's smth about hearing firecrackers for the 1st time in my entire life after the authorities banned it, and for a full 10 minutes. it's..special. don't know. don't feel very inspired now, esp when i'm sitting here with firecracker debris and ash in my hair, so i'll just wish everyone a happy year of the monkey erhh yarh and may all of you bu bu gao sheng nian nian you yu...uh and of course, gong xi fa cai! char 1/22/2004 02:13:00 AM

Wednesday, January 14, 2004 after my 3 day -and counting- - and no i've not been fired yet- stint at pricewaterhousecoopers i feel obliged to publish my very own survival guide. charmaine's guide to roughing it out in the cbd! 1. jaywalking is the most popular mode of transport. always wait for the red man and run no matter how much your heels are killing you. 2. chope the muchly-coveted china square food court tables with tissue packets. 3. mcdonald's is the cheapest eatery around so make that your staple. to celebrate their 25th anniversary fillet o fishes are currently selling for only $1.80!! wert. then again i'm rather repulsed by macs after zhiming told me they recycle their day-old cokes by pumping air into the drinks. 4. or you could fast from cbd food and survive on nothing but hot chocolate and khong guan biscuits from the pwc pantries. it's free that way. 5. don't wear shawls embellished with sequins in the office. it's not professional, too showy and bad for the company's image! (i'm so sure larh.) anything shiny is decadent. if in doubt, just wear something blaaaah like black and white. but i've been quite lucky so far i guess..the 2 secretaries i'm under are pretty friendly, i've got nice people to talk to, to have lunch with and eat kaya toast with, the workload's far from heavy and the jobs are pretty fun. i like despatchment jobs most of all, you get to leave the office and walk to other clients' firms. today i cabbed to the Concourse at beach road, then claimed back the $9 cab fare from the cashier on the 18th floor. then i got to go to the UIC building to deliver some other stuf and grabbed ice cream sundaes on the way back. and since we're so free zhiming and i spend all our time playing pencil games, reading books and studying driving theory, sleeping and exploring all the diff pantries on diff floors, and i even got to handle mtv asia and nickelodeon files! ok by handle i mean deliver them from one secretary to another on the same floor but still! i guess the most tiring part of the job are the call overs...so many big figures and technical terms and sometimes they make such hideous calculation mistakes. and i really cannot afford to make mistakes cuz pwc is such a prestigious firm and we're dealing with millions here i'll prob be sued if i screw up. and so far there's been no history of the company firing temps and i intend to keep it that way. the morning rush hour's all part of the experience too. standing butt to butt, shoulder to shoulder on the mrt with the rest of the cbd crowd all decked out in office gear, everyone scrambling for copies of today and streats, the click clack click of heels against the pavements, and on market street people sit at coffeeshops having their last teh-oh kicks before a busy day at work. the practised, perfect poise of the lady workers, everyone looking purposeful and goal-oriented as they head towards their respective destinations. slowly, the cacophony of pigeon noises, car horns, shouts of coffee shop boys and clicking of stilettos against the hard tarmac gently ebbs away, and the sun rises above the tall high-rise buildings of the concrete jungle, as i start to realise that beauty can be found even in the dreariest of places like the cbd. week one is almost ending so here's to 5 more successful weeks! char 1/14/2004 08:18:00 PM
Sunday, January 11, 2004 So Jesus said to them, "Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, "Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you." matthew 17:20 cell today was stiff stuff...alot of intellectual discussion that i couldn't really engage myself in cuz my brain is currently on hiatus and is seriously malfunctioning. i can't exactly recall what was actually said but it was something along the lines of trying to explain Christianity and the existence of our God by using secular and scientific thinking. such a timely reminder of all those blah gp essays; "religion is a refuge for the irrational, discuss". and charmain was saying smth about just what if we were really worshipping the wrong god and someday we stand before the gates of heaven and are denied access cuz wouldn't you know it, the one true religion's mormonism. and how taking that leap of faith to believe in God is cheapened cuz we have the might-as-well mindset, which only makes religion seem like a gamble, and we're all taking bets here. and if bingo, we score, the pearly gates open wide, but if we take the wrong bet, we descend into the sulfurous, fiery depths of hell where we burn forever in eternal damnation. not a pretty thought innit. if i had to classify myself as a believer, i think i'd be a hybrid. a cross between the mabel and the charmain type. on some days i'd feel absolutely convicted that my God is real without needing concrete evidence while on other days i question His existence and find myself falling into the throes of uncertainty. it's on those days that i keep my faith going by telling myself that archeologists really did find the remnants of noah's ark on mount arafat and so if that story is true then the other stories in the bible about God and Jesus and His disciples must be too. very extremely weak link i know. but as char mentioned, you can't explain God using scientific knowledge. you simply can't. but bearing in mind that for every argument there is agst Christianity, there's an equally strong counter argument on our side. so in a way nobody wins. and i don't think saying "believing by faith" is a cheap excuse. i think it's a choice. i choose to see by faith and i don't say that to explain why i choose to be a christian. i don't need to excuse myself for being a christian and non-believers might disparage my choice as a stupid choice but hey it's a choice anyhow. and pastor khong said, it's harder to prove that there's no God than to prove that there is. that's why in a way i'm glad i'm getting baptised soon. (on the 17th of january 5 pm tc i might add..i know char's prob gona tell me i'm shameless hah.) i think of my baptism, among other things, as a safeguard. i've made this decision and i'm going to stick to it no matter how stupid others might view it. my experiences with the saviour for the past 18 years have been evidence enough to make me want to build on that little mustard-seed size of faith i hope i possess. and with that faith i'll be able to move mountains in my life with God's infinite strength and guidance. char 1/11/2004 11:08:00 PM
Saturday, January 10, 2004 just came back from o1 campfire night. and it was sooo fun larh!! doing all the mass dances, the SHINE and the DIAMOND and inner hand outer hand grab pull and ssssss...ahha soo fun. and reading off hanyupinyin from the transparency. then doing all the hoi parts with a vigorous pumping of the hand in the air, led by van. but it was so not fun being chased and getting sprayed okay. erh-herm. but the absolutely most fun part was squeezing into justin's car...all 8 of us: clarence junyang peiyun darryl hsien ange me and justin at the wheel...6 of us in the backseat, me sitting on hsien's lap totally obstruting the rear view mirror. its a wonder how we ever got to 6th ave in one piece..junyang sitting on clarence and feeling "something hard" and he said it just kept getting harder. later trying to look less conspicuous among all the juniors and grandjuniors, then deciding in the end to go to venezia. and feeling so relieved listening to darryl tell me how it's forgiveable to make blunders during the a's as we walk home. don't know but we really seem to be closer to our seniors than our juniors, i'll always rem the clarence/pooka and deborah adventures, doing the prrrrrops hand actions with our seniors during dramafeste, cristelle writing the nicest angel-mortal letters to me..stuf like that larh. maybe next year they'll come again then 5 generations can reunite. maybe. char 1/10/2004 12:59:00 AM
Thursday, January 08, 2004 everyone's getting nostalgic over f4. sniff. and robin just helped propel my nostalgia to another level by passing me a cd of all the class videos and photos today. and there's even a music video of an f4 song inside..it's one of the nicer ones must go find out the chinese title. anyway yes meteor garden was really such an integral part of our j1 days larh. i rem justin giving me that meteor garden cd for my bday and everyone except me started clammering for it. so that was my formal introduction to MG madness. rem i was sitting in lecture and van suddenly whipped out her phone to show off her pic msg of huazelei and below it was his very quotable quote about standing upside down to stop the tears from falling. and then we, ange gra van me would have like some sorta f4 formation as we walked across the central plaza...and we'd even assume characters for ourselves. van would always be vaness, mel claimed she had the hair of daomingsi, grace would be qinghe but not that it was her choice...and of cuz i was the undisputed vic chou larh. hurhur. omg those were really the days. and tho we knew it was grossing others and ourselves out we just kept at it cuz it was so goddamn fun. van and i even went into the video shop at taka to buy...erh ok i think i've disclosed more than i should have already. the cd even has videos of us tossing yusheng, our class cheer, nirmala ong's lesson where john is asking a question, and i'm trying to find the one robin took of gohkahyong. i really miss everyone. when i went back to hc on tues and crashed 04s72 i just kept thinking abt my 1st 3 months. introducing ourselves to choe and to the rest of the class. haihan saying he liked the sea and everything to do with it, john standing up with his fly opened and saying we must find a solution to the problem, grace saying her fave band was radiohead, grace whispering to me i'm gona make you the bimbo of 02s72 and just seconds later i stand up and declare that my favourite colour is seven, ange saying she liked singing (i think), michelle and jy panicking cuz fox/toad absconded with our class flag, shiyao/graphic calculator looking like lee hsien loong and we actually had to answer questions from 71 people about him being lee HL's son, ken and robin starring as osama and his lackey, the rg girls passing notes around class saying smile if you're not wearing underwear, everyone passing notes blatantly lying about someone liking ken, gra and me bursting into class one fine day announcing that class was being held in E205 only E205 was the toilet and everyone followed us there. ange van gra and me doing our best GBG impersonations and saluting and bending down clapping and being hysterical outside the reading room and subsequently got caught by JT who actually marched across the bridge to get to us. our class the only class to line up waaay early before bell rang for morning assembly so choe would have nothing to say about us being consistently late.
but sometimes a photo says so much more than just words char 1/08/2004 09:54:00 PM

Saturday, January 03, 2004 today i worked at specialist and woohs it's really majorly superrrr fun!! heh for one thing emerald's opp so it's easy to get my kicks from mos burger milk tea and the kids of the customers who patronise the shop are really really soo cute. they really are!! *gushgushgush* i can't resist bending down to every one of them to say hello and what's your name and then gush more to the accompanying parent "she's sooo cute!!!" to which the adoring parent would reply yeah she is. and it sure beats sitting around in the warehouse tagging stuf like i said before the warehouse is sooo high up and so secluded if there was a fire i would be burnt with all the victoria's secret bras. haha there're curry puffs too! and hotel phoenix cafe is just downstairs!! wooshh. but one thing i've learnt tho is to hold my tongue and not comment about the gargantuan sizes. it's very hard to be hanging up a size 22 pair of pants that would fit two of me and not mention anything about its immensity. but yeah i nearly let that slip in front of the lady who tried it seconds ago and professed that they were too small. i think d factory outlet is really going places though. they've got loyalty points and all now which means more data entry but it's come a long way :) and another new year resolution is to improve my horrendously despicably disgusting pool skills from now til july. haha today went to play at bukit merah...the pool there really rocks. jac and i are gona work damn hard hahaha worrrk it.. and another thing. jac told me JT's gone? i cannot believe it!!! one of my new year resolutions was to clear all my japan souvenirs, hello kitty cakes, new year streamers, christmas cards and giftwrap from my desk. so i dug out my box of christmas cards buried somewhere in my closet to put in the ones i received this year. and then i felt somewhat compelled to read thru all the cards i've ever received all the way from pri4..it's just so sweet reading them all over again. almost like a walk down memory lane. and i really saw how my friendships with people progressed or regressed over the years. cards from xingying every year since pri 4, cards from hui'en every year in sec sch, zi's very prettily decorated cards from sec 3 onwards, jac's very sweet christmas greetings from the past few years..annalisa and kietmei's looong messages, which made me realise how i've got the sweetest ever juniors. van's cards in the past 2 years, ange's and nat's handcrafted creations. and singular cards from grace from j1, kellyn from sec 1, melissa guan from sec 3, the latest one from joan apologising for being a bitch at prom when she really wasn't. you know what they say, friends are God's way of taking care of us. and it's really true. i give thanks for each and everyone of my friends cuz they really are God's gifts to me. no matter how brief and transient our encounters might've been, or how lasting and memorable the moments shared, i am grateful. i really truly am. i won't ever understand how people can throw away their cards. i know i'm never going to do that. i rem sally saying she threw them away cuz there were just too many to keep...but i'm gona store them in suitcases like victoria beckham, and one day i'll package them in hatboxes tied with organza ribbon, and send them back to myself when i'm 80, open them with the same anticipation as before, and relive the joy of friendship from the christmasses of yore. char 1/03/2004 12:01:00 AM

yesterday was spent out in the afternoon scouring the sales for my skirt that refused to surface, then eating the @&%!-ing good oreo cheesecake at ps, then climbing the steps to fort canning hill to the strains of jonathan tay's and angus' elect guitars and an indian singing qing tian -that might sound funny but it wasn't, sitting on the steps with ling and jac and chai, eating egg sandwiches and pizza, then later lying on mabel's lap blowing horns and calling aina ah-soh and auntie and playing with lightsticks and feeling like i was at a cantopop concert. then squinting to make out the orion belt but to no avail. and wondering if ants were attracted to blood. then at 2200h 31 jan we all stood up and hollered and shouted out songs til we were hoarse. then the clouds slowly float apart from each other revealing the orion in its full star-spangled splendour. then the countdown begins, and at the stroke of 12 everyone screams happy new year, and at the same time the air echoed with the booming of fireworks from esplanade, and everyone ran to get a better glimpse of the golden showers cascading in the midnight sky. then later charles pops poppers and lets pretty shimmery streamers fall to the drain, and the resudual confetti gets whipped around by the wind and is carried to the road where mad drunk ang-mohs lean out of their taxis to scream happy new year at everyone in sight. then hit 6th ave, met the rest, then cabbed to boat quay where mad drunk bengs spray foam directly in our faces, empty spray cans and streamers lined the streets, and hendrix was playing solid r 'n b. walked to the fullerton which looks absolutely gorgeous as usual, then walked past the merlion to the esplanade where couples were sitting in tow, then walked by embassy which looks extremely tempting but we're all broke, then took NR8 back to nat's house. and that's how i spent my last few hours of 2003 and my 1st few hours of 2004. char 1/01/2004 03:47:00 PM
