Saturday, October 13, 2007 some time during paeds, ruffy went missing. cue many frantic phonecalls and search teams and lost dog posters put up all over my neighbourhood. when we finally found him at the spca after 3 days, he was scruffy the prodigal indian dog, really mangy and stinky, adorned with the brightest, reddest pottu on his forehead. apparently his great adventure came to an abrupt halt at bukit timah road when a bunch of indian men found him. he really is the silliest dog in the world but you can't help but love him anyway. ![]() and after one month, the pottu refuses to come off. i think i shall have to bleach him. thank you everyone who helped me find him! especially kl and jayne, you girls are the sweetest. char 10/13/2007 11:35:00 PM

Friday, August 17, 2007 and if you thought short postings were keeping us busy we look as pleased as punch. and of course, the essential embarrassing as hell photo. posing like a disgraced celebrity is de rigueur. the past 2 months left me little time to catch my breath, offering just a foretaste of what each speciality might be like. rather enjoyed anaesthesia, surprisingly, and wish it could have been longer with less disruptions. it's on the operating table that a person is most vulnerable in every sense, and watching anaesthetists lend comfort and assurance to patients just before induction, and talking and joking with those awake during spinals and epidurals to keep them company, made me realise that they do so much more than just so-called background work. this would be promising, if only my physio weren't so shit. forensic pathology and the visit to the mortuary was definitely a harrowing experience, one with memories that haunted me and culminated in many a sleepless night. i think i act braver than i actually am. in truth i'm just a big wuss who's still sleeps with her nightlight on. but watching the autopsies being performed with such rapidity and habituated precision, void of any emotion, hearing the grinding of bone with cold, sharp steel; you forget that they were once so very much like us, with family and friends, with hopes, fears, desires, longing. it's sad, really. one last precious weekend before the start of the 4 month marathon. it's payback time now, isn't it. char 8/17/2007 11:53:00 PM
Tuesday, July 24, 2007 great wall revisited for all the bad flak china has been receiving lately, e.g. poisoned century eggs and white rabbit sweets and the hotly debated wtf chopped cardboard meat, which i think is a strong contender for the 8th wonder of the world, i'd have to say that china remains as one of the most bizarre countries around, unless you like this sorta thing: many cracked bowls later, my brother was able to do this too. proves that all you need is just a big tummy. but fake food or not, i really did dig the great wall, clearly the highlight of my trip the steps were massive in height and tiny in width, either the qin soldiers had bound feet so they could climb them more easily, or fell to their deaths trying to scale them in their clunky armor and boots. i'm leaning towards the latter. the view from the top- you really don't want to fall down. chances are people would let you roll on past as they'd be too tired to help you themselves. the great wall in all it's grandeur. truly awe-inspiring stuff, no? here's what else is awe-inspiring, the only person to have ever scaled the entire wall spent a ballbreaking 8 months doing it and wore out 6 pairs of shoes. i'm getting angina just contemplating the sheerness of that remarkable feat. this was pretty amazing too, that qin guy was a crazy bugger. so i guess i actually do like china, quirky eccentricities and all. i loved sipping tea in a teahouse, riding the trishaw, having my feet massaged by chinese medical students (foot relexology is part of their curriculum) and eating candied strawberries from the roadside stalls. besides, anywhere which sells shoes for $4 a pop gets my vote. i'm a fan. char 7/24/2007 10:05:00 PM
